MASSAGE AND
MOVEMENT THERAPY
IN CHEVY CHASE, MD
Freedom of movement is part of our mission at NP. We encourage our clients to “move well and move often.” That’s why we’re practitioners and proponents of movement and massage therapy. These two therapies are major components in the body work process. This process uses movement and massage therapy to assist clients in reaching movement goals, addressing pain, and recovering from injury.
Movement Therapy Assessment
All new clients are required to have an assessment to provide information about which health and wellness areas require improvement, change or continuation of behavior. Assessments will include manual therapy.
A Movement Assessment is used to understand the client’s body and functional movement patterns. This assessment can identify limiting factors or dysfunctions that are hindering movement or causing pain. The assessment also provides the needed information to create a plan of action, helping the client move out of pain or restricted movement and into improved functional movement patterns. Each assessment is tailored to meet the client’s needs
A Movement Therapy Assessment includes:
- Selected Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA): "is a movement based diagnostic system which systematically finds the cause of pain - not just the source - by logically breaking down dysfunctional movement patterns in a structured, repeatable assessment."
- NeuroKinetic Therapy (NKT): a manual muscle testing system that looks to correct the root cause of painful movement patterns caused by dysfunctional patterns stored in the brain.
- Functional Range Assessment: assesses the range of motion in each area of the body to discover joint dysfunctions and areas of vulnerability by examining each joint movement, articulation and capacity.
Types of Manual Therapy Sessions
Movement Therapy Session - 30 or 45 min *
This session focuses on addressing concerns detected during the movement assessment with the priority of helping clients reach their movement goal(s). Movement Therapy sessions tackle problematic areas as well as provide preventive care to keep your body from developing an injury from daily activities.
The session utilizes a variety of modalities and techniques including but not limited to:
- Active Release Technique: soft tissue manipulation that focuses on releasing injured or overused muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves
- Cupping: the use of plastic or glass cups to provide suction on various areas of the body to help free up restrictions, aid in the lymphatic system and improve blood flow to the area to start the healing process. This often leaves bruises that recover in 4-7 days.
- Blade: is a blade like tool used to assist in altering the muscular tissue tone by manipulating the myofascial system. It can also be used to desensitize reactive tissue awareness and bring tissue back to its normalized state.
- Tape: a special kinesiology tape used to help decrease pain, provide decompression to a specific tissue area, and can provide a stimulus to improve body awareness.
